Storymaker lets you experiment with storytelling in film by using your own edit, voices, music and sounds.
Developed in partnership with Magic Light Pictures the makers of the animated Gruffalo and Stick Man short films, the app features key scenes from The Gruffalo film. It is also supported by an extensive teaching resource developed by Into Film that contains cross-curricular activities, printable activity sheets and technical guidance to support most effective use of the app.
Made in Me was approached by Into Film, a charity dedicated to championing film and film-making in schools, to create an app that would introduce younger children to the storytelling possibilities of using film and video in the classroom. Remarkably the project was also going to be able to benefit from material from the Gruffalo animation.
The Into Film Storymaker app for iPad is free to download from the Apple App Store but requires a free Into Film educator's account obtainable at their website.
It was important and challenging to strike the right balance between structure and creative freedom but this was achieved largely through the apps powerful audio tools. For example simply changing the music from happy to sad has a dramatic effect on the tone and it was lots of fun seeing how well children responded to that.
